Week 2 Discussion Question

Miguel has a very different life from Esperanza. Their differences have changed their friendship. Miguel repeats something Esperanza once said to him, " In Mexico we stand on different sides of the river." What does Miguel mean by this? What are some of their differences? Do you think they can ever be friends again, why or why not?

Make sure to write your answer in RAD format. Be sure to check spelling, grammar, capitals, and punctuation before you post. Type it in your blogging doc first!

  1. Minguel had a different life than Esperanza because Esperanza was rich and Minguel was kind of poor. There differences change their friendships because Esperanza had everything and Minguel has barely anything. When Miguel repeats something Esperanza once said to him, " In Mexico we stand on different sides of the river it means there are two sides in a persan’s life you can be poor or you can be rich and those are two sides i'm poor and your rich and that means were kind of crossing the lines. They kind of can’t be friends again because Esperanzas moving to America.

    2. Great rad response and answer but I think they can be friends again because Miguel is going with them to America and so they try to be friends again. But you could be right if they don't makeup so it could go either way.

  2. I think that what Miguel said meant that they have completely different ways that they live their lives, Esperanza lives her life in riches with a nice big house only her and her family. With servants scattered around the fields, With Esperanza wearing a nice pretty new dress every single day, well that was before her life became more similar this. Miguel has a life as a servant serving Esperanza. His life is not changing. I think that they can be friends again because if their lives are more similar and that might bring them closer together. Maybe if they are forced to work together then they will actually get along and help each other out.

  3. What I think Miguel means is that he has a different kind of life than Esperanza. She comes from a family with more money than his. She has been spoiled her whole life and Miguel has had to work hard. But there not in Mexico so it might impact them being friends again because Esperanza used to treat him not the best because he was a slave for her and now that she is not wealthy anymore she wants him to help her. One of there differences is she has always had a fancy house to live in and Miguel had to live in not such a nice place.

  4. When Miguel said that he and Esperanza stands on different sides of the river he means that Esperanza is very rich and Miguel is a servant. They are very different because Miguel knows how to clean things and do a lot of work and Esperanza doesn’t know how to change a diaper! I don’t think that they could be friends because they both have different tasks at the camp so they might not see each other that much.
