Week 1 Discussion Question

In Chapter 2 Esperanza learns of her father's death. Her grandmother says to her "There is no rose without thorns," which Esperanza takes to mean "That there is no life without difficulties." This will be one of the most difficult things Esperanza faces in her life. Why will this be so hard for her? Why do you think the author starts the story this way?

  1. The death of her father in Chapter 2 will be so hard on Esperanza because she couldn't play with him anymore and since he is dead, there will be no one to pick the grapes and make the wine. Also, her mom might have to marry someone else that might not like Esperanza. Why I think the author started the story like this, is because it might be the tragedy that made them go to California to work as slaves. It also could be to hook you in so you want to know what happens to them.

  2. I think that this will be hard for her because before her dad passed on her and her dad were so close. They would walk around watching the servants gather fruit i the fields. They heard the earth's heartbeat and after he died she was full of sorrow and sadness she would probably never get to hear the earth's heartbeat again no one could replace her dad. I think another reason is that her dad would have never treated Esperanza as bad as Tio Luis ( Her uncle) threatened to treat her. He threatened to put her in a boarding school for people that need to learn manners. I think the author started the story this way because the whole story is about how Esperanza has to overcome all of the hard things that she is going through and if he died late in the story then it doesn’t give detail about what she is going through.

  3. Esperanza’s father has died and this will be hard for her because without her dad her family will be much quieter and even more sad. I think this because with her dad gone, Esperanza’s mom might marry someone else. Also Esperanza’s dad took care of all the plants that grew there, now that he is dead they might die. Last, since Esperanza blurted out the landlord can't marry her mom he might kick them out. I think the author started the story this way to show that it is the start of the book but also the start of the sad part of her life. The rest of the story will probably be about how to make her life happy again after this loss.

  4. This is hard for Esperanza because she and her dad did a lot of fun things. Her father’s step brother wants to marry her mother. If her dad’s step brother marries her mom she would be sent to a boarding school to learn manners and her mom and her don’t want that to happen.
