Week 5 Discussion Question

Esperanza has greatly changed since the beginning of the book. Discuss some ways that you think she has changed using specific examples from the story. If you were Esperanza, what would you do in the packing shed when seeing Marta hiding? Do you think she would've reacted the same way a few months earlier?

Make sure to answer using a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your conventions before you submit your post and type it in you blogging doc first.

  1. Some ways that Esperanza has changed since the beginning of the book is she is starting to realize that a lot people aren’t treating the Mexican’s fairly and is thinking about striking. In the text, Esperanza was very mad when miguel told her that his boss told him that they didn't need him any more. She told him to stand up to is boss. Also, in the text, when Esperanza asked Isabel’s mom if a girl from Mexico ever was picked to be the May Queen, she said no. This made Esperanza mad because Isabel got mostly good grades and she still wasn’t picked. If I were Esperanza, I would of done the same thing that she did when she saw Marta hiding because Marta was just fighting for a better life and she shouldn’t be taken out of America for doing that. Esperanza wouldn’t have done the same thing a few months ago because Marta was really mean to Esperanza.

  2. Some ways Esperanza has changed are, She has got more used to being a peasant. For example she is learning to do new things and lucky now she might be able to bath herself! I would react different when I saw Marta in the shed then I would a few months earlier because I would be more used to things popping out. For example when Marta jumped out I wouldn’t be so scared because I saw a rattlesnake pop out before and had tons of things pop up on me.I also wouldn’t be scared because I wouldn’t watch TV any more so I would not think “AHHH ITS THE THING I SAW ON TV IT'S OUT TO GET ME AHHHHHH!” So that would not have a bad effect on me.

  3. I think some of the ways that Esperanza has changed are that she has became more aware that she is becoming a worker and she is enjoying it. She has become more loving to Mama and she wants to help Mama get better. I think that she would have reacted differently than she did early in the book because she knew better and what not to do. She might have been scared to talk to them after strike.

  4. Some ways Esperanza has changed is she is much more kind like at the beginning she wouldn't let the little girl touch the doll and now she even gave the doll away. Another way is she actually has adjusted to her new life and isn't getting upset about having to work. If I was Esperanza and I saw Marta I would of told the police and have her sent back because of what she had done. no I don't think she would of reacted the same way a few months ago because if she wouldn't even let the little girl touch the doll then she probably would not let Marta not get in trouble and get sent back to mexico.
